KIDNEY DONOR NEEDED - HELP RESCUE ANA

Ana

Ana Rendich, needs a kidney donor.  My wife and mother to three has end stage kidney disease.  Ana=s kidneys are failing and she needs a transplant.  Doctors tell us the best way to help Ana live is a kidney transplant.  We are seeking someone with Type O blood who cares enough about other people to donate the biggest gift that Ana will ever receive, the kidney that Ana needs to live. This is Ana with two of our children during a very happy moment in our life.

When your kidneys fail your body is unable to clean your blood and you die.  People use dialysis to clean their blood.  But not for a regular lifetime.  Kidney transplants allow people live to far longer than they would on dialysis.  Many people die waiting for a kidney donor from a deceased  person.

Our family first checked to see if we could donate a kidney to Ana but no one in our family is a “cross match” to Ana.  A cross match is when blood type, tissue and antibodies from two people are nearly the same.  If there is a cross match, a kidney donation and transplant is possible.  Ana will get a transplant only if someone with Type O blood who is a good “cross match” will donate a kidney to Ana.  Positive or negative blood type does not matter.

It is hard to ask but unless we ask -  the very brave, generous and special person who wants to donate a kidney will not know about Ana and will not be able to say yes.  So we have to ask.

Ana is “sensitized.”  One out of every 3 people who need a kidney transplant is sensitized.  This makes it much harder to find a donor that matches and can donate to Ana.   Six people have been tested to be a donor so far but no match.  We have transferred Ana to John Hopkins that has a program for sensitized people.  Hopkins can help Ana.  The Center we were at could not and so they stopped testing people who wanted to donate a kidney.  They even turned people away who wanted to be tested as a donor for Ana.

If you want to be a donor - if you want to give the gift of life to Ana, please call our John Hopkins Transplant Coordinators - Athelene Henry at 410-614-6604 or Holly Christen at 410-502-5291.  Athelene or Holly can mail you information on being a donor and arrange for you to be tested to see if you are a donor match for Ana.  Your doctor will draw a tube of blood using a kit Hopkins will mail you.  Your doctor will then mail this back to Hopkins for testing.

You must have Type O blood, be between the ages of 21 and 60, be healthy, not have hypertension and be normal weight. John Hopkins won't allow you to donate if it is not safe for you. Our insurance covers all medical costs for you including testing.  The surgery is laporoscopic, done with small incisions.

Please think about being the one brave generous person who can match to Ana and give her the gift of life. You can email me at rescue_ana@comcast.net or call 703-851-2420 to find out about being a donor.  You can read the newspaper about Ana at  http://www.fredericksburg.com/News/FLS/2008/032008/03302008/362394

I understand if you read this letter and say "this is not for me."  And that is OK. It is not for you.  But if you believe in miracles, please say a prayer for Ana.  Please think about being a donor. And please help us spread the word.  God Bless.

April 25, 2008 - Good news.  Ana has started dialysis and that will make her feel much better.  Ana transferred to John Hopkins Hospital - one of the 3 or 4 best centers in the world for kidney transplants for sensitized people like Ana - so that is good. And in the last six months we found out that there are so many wonderful people that care enough about people to help Ana.

Ana has been in a hospital in DC since April 18th but is now home.  Ana had surgery to implant a catheter and a fistula for dialysis. Dialysis started the night Ana had surgery.  People starting dialysis do it in a hospital in case of a bad reaction to dialysis.  Ana did have a bad reaction and the doctors experimented until they found out what works for Ana.  Ana will continue 4 hour per session dialysis three days per week at the local dialysis center.

Our local newspaper did an article about Ana.  So many of our friends have helped Ana and the kids.  Ana's artist friends are doing an art show for Ana. Caring strangers are helping us look for a donor for Ana. Thank you everyone for everything you have done. And Ana is home again.  So this is good news.

Please take the time to sign our Guestbook.  It really makes both Ana and me smile and gives us hope to know people visited and cared.
